Regional Development Agency of Lviv Region, together with its partners, announces the launch of the RE:FRAME LILIEN poster competition for young artists, designers, and visual culture researchers.
Did you know that the roots of European modernism are closely linked to the Lviv region?
Ephraim Moses Lilien was born in Drohobych. His works are included in the collections of US universities, European art institutions, and museums in the Middle East, yet he still does not receive the attention he deserves in the Ukrainian context.
Like Ivan Franko and Lesya Ukrayinka, Moses Lilien belongs to the intellectual elite of the 19th and 20th centuries. As representatives of “stateless” peoples, they sought out national codes and interacted with the European cultural space independently or sometimes in direct creative collaboration.
We wondered what a meeting of these artists would be like today, given their shared values and their desire to embody the spirit of the people through universal images. We find the answers in their reflections on biblical scenes. Images of prophecy, exodus, and the search for their own “promised land” became a reference point and a universal metaphor for national resilience.
We invite you today to go beyond contemplation, engage in creative discussion, and share your personal vision of the intersection of their works.
