Ukraine at the international congress in Portugal

On 5 June 2025, Maksym Martyn, project expert and head of the Judaism Department at the Lviv Museum of the History of Religion, spoke at the Interregional Meeting of the JEWELS TOUR project and the 7th International Congress of Luso-Sephardic Dialogues in Coimbra, Portugal.

The Congress is an important annual international event dedicated to issues of preserving the memory of Jewish cultural heritage in Europe and beyond. For the Regional Development Agency of Lviv Region, participation in the event was a valuable opportunity to represent the region in an international dialogue on heritage valorisation and contribute to the common European scientific discourse.

The report “Drohobych. Historical Landmark and the Town of Three Artists” introduced the European audience to a unique example of a town whose identity was shaped by the Jewish cultural presence alongside Ukrainian and Polish traditions.

Maurycy Gottlieb, Ephraim Moses Lilien, and Bruno Schulz were three world-class Jewish artists born in Drohobych. Each of them was a creator beyond national boundaries: Ukrainian, Polish, German, and Jewish culture. Their complex identities are a reflection of the multicultural Drohobych.

This speech became an important part of the dialogue on heritage as a bridge between the past and the future.
