March 10, 2025

A working meeting was held between Yulian Konechnyi, Head of the LNMU-RDA Project Office, and Professor Wertheim, Chair of the Radboud Centre for Infectious Diseases, who actively cooperates with the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Professor Wertheim is a WHO consultant for the mission to Ukraine on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and infection prevention and control (IPC), as well as a member of the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group on AMR (STAG-AMR).

The working meeting took place at the University Hospital, a branch of the Danylo Halytskyi Lviv National Medical University. Professor Wertheim had the opportunity to learn about the implementation of antimicrobial surveillance programmes and the practical aspects of cooperation between infection control departments, bacteriologists, and clinicians in the fight against antibiotic resistance. He also familiarised himself with the work of the Centre for Microbiological Research at the LNMU Department of Microbiology, its laboratory capacity, and key areas of scientific research in this field.

The key topics of the meeting included
— the importance of infection control in preventing nosocomial infections;
— the proper use of antimicrobial drugs in clinical practice;
— the role of microbiological studies in the early detection of pathogens and determining their sensitivity to antibiotics;
— the European experience in implementing antimicrobial surveillance programmes and prospects for their adaptation in Ukraine.

This visit was an important step in developing international cooperation, which will contribute to implementing effective healthcare practices and strengthening the fight against antimicrobial resistance.
